Description

Join Atlas Obscura Society D.C. and Dupont Underground for an exclusive tour both inside and out of the historic trolley tunnels underneath Dupont Circle.

Opening in 1949, the 75,000 square foot subterranean trolley system full of tracks, tunnels, platforms, and passageways helped alleviate traffic and congestion. Thirteen years later, however, the entire trolley system shut down due to declining ridership. And for five decades—with the exception of a brief ill-fated food court—these tunnels lay unused and forgotten.

Today, the cultural organization Dupont Underground has transformed these long-ignored tunnels into an art space and a gathering place.

Our tour will cover part of the tunnels as well as views from outdoors (and above ground). We'll be led by Noel Kassewitz, Director of Arts Programming, and Sarah Lerner, Manager of Tours and Community Events. We will also be accompanied by Founder Julian Hunt and Chief Executive Officer Susan Corrigan, who will tell us what the future holds for this relic of the past.
