Event description

Description

On Saturday, September 14, Friends of Outer Island, in cooperation with the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, will be sponsoring a free guided paddling tour of approximately 3.5 miles round trip, down the peaceful waters of the Menunketesuck River and into Gatchen Creek, which leads to the refuge grounds. While paddling, participants will be able to explore a salt marsh habitat from the water and observe the abundant wild life that depends on this unique environment. We may have a chance to see great blue herons, black-crowned night herons, green herons, great egrets, and snowy egrets lining the banks and snatching fish from the shallows. Osprey sometimes plummet from above and eagles are known to have visited the site, so bring your binoculars and cameras. After our paddle we will drive a short distance to Refuge headquarters at 733 Old Clinton Rd., where a picnic lunch will be provided.

Participants will meet at 9:30 at the Kirtland Landing boat launch. The approximate street address is 50 Old Clinton Rd (Rt 145). The small parking area is easily found near the bridge that crosses the Menunketesuck River. Registration for this event will be limited to 8 vehicles, but multiple kayaks or canoes may be carried on each vehicle. ***PFDs are required***

Inclement weather may cancel this event; check this site and Friends of Outer Island Facebook page by 8:00 am on the scheduled date.
