About this event

Presented by The Hawaiʻi Institute for Sustainable Community Food Systems at University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu, Honolulu Civil Beat, UH Better Tomorrow Speaker Series, and Waiwai Collective, this series is meant to generate key opportunities for community dialogue among a diverse audience, aiming to achieve a healthy, equitable, resilient and sustainable food system for Hawaiʻi.

Agenda:

Doors open at 5 p.m. for booths, music and a complimentary pupu. Speakers will start at 6 p.m, followed by an optional post-discussion community forum from 7 - 8 p.m.

Speakers:

David Lopez, Executive Officer of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency

With over 20 years of experience in international crisis management, David has developed threat mitigation plans, response plans and has responded to events ranging from hurricanes, to aircraft disasters, and terrorist incidents. Prior to joining HI-EMA, David was the CEO of Office of Special Services, where he led company teams in support of US Government, host nation governments, and private industry interests in emerging nations, primarily in the Middle East and North Africa for 10 years.

Subhashni Raj, PhD, Assistant Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Hawaii, Mānoa.

Dr. Raj is an Assistant Professor of Urban Planning in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Prior to this appointment, she was a Post-doctoral Scholar at the University of California, Davis. Dr Raj’s research focuses on the land-food-water nexus in a changing climate in marginalized communities in the Global South and North. She is a Kauffman Fellow and Foreign Fulbright Scholar and has worked for UN Women as a Gender and Humanitarian Analyst prior to joining UC Davis. At UN Women she helped lead the disaster and climate resilience programming working across the Pacific.

Parking Directions: Ka Waiwai Parking is located on the makai side of the Varsity Building. The entrance to the lot is located off of Coyne Street. Parking is $6.

***if you park in any of the lots located on the mauka side of the building you will need to self pay at the self pay station. They will ticket/tow in these lots if you do not pay.
