Event Details

Hurricane Sandy…

The Boston Marathon Bombing…

The West, Texas Fertilizer Plant Fire and Explosion…

When large-scale disasters like these occur, public safety
resources are often overwhelmed.   Emergency calls to 911
may go unanswered, with assistance delayed by hours—
maybe even days.

Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) equip citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to survive—through free training in disaster preparedness, first aid, emergency response, and other critical skills.

Since 2003, Montgomery CERT has helped equip people who live or work in the community to help themselves
and others in the event of a disaster or other emergency.   Montgomery CERT-trained volunteers assisted in the
evacuation of the Lake Needwood Dam area in June, 2006, after a week of heavy rains weakened the dam,
endangering residents’ safety. Montgomery CERT volunteers have also provided crowd control, emergency
first aid, and related services for the A&T Golf Tournament in Bethesda and other major events in the county,
staffed emergency shelters following severe weather occurrences, and worked to encourage others in the
community to Be Prepared!

Montgomery CERT Needs YOU!

Please join us for an exciting and fun day as a mock disaster victim—

  • Help CERT Trainees demonstrate their skills as part of their final practical exam
  • Fulfill Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge requirement #7
  • Earn MCPS Student Service Learning (SSL) credit

After check-in, volunteers will receiving a briefing on the mock disaster scenario. Then, they will be assigned roles and work with CERT moulage experts, who will create realistic-looking “injuries.” Volunteers are encouraged to use their prior knowledge of first aid to become realistic actors—demonstrating appropriate symptoms for their assigned injuries.

Please Note:

  • Participation is limited to Scouts who have attained the rank of First Class or higher.
  • Come dressed in old clothes—the scenario may require tears/holes, and fake blood stains are likely.
  • Wear protective footwear (e.g., hiking boots). No sandals or open-toed shoes.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather—rain gear, layers, etc.
  • Bring a blanket or small ground cover to sit/lie on outside—the scenario may require you to be “down” (even if the ground is wet/muddy)
  • Bring a water bottle to keep hydrated and a bag lunch/snacks
  • Bring your signed Hold Harmless Agreement/Talent Release Form (attached
    to your confirmation email/admission ticket)
  • Adult chaperones must remain with youth participants at all times

REGISTER BY OCTOBER 16, 2013—or call for late registration!
