Event description

Description

Employers are always looking for exceptional talent. However, one pool of exceptional candidates often gets overlooked – college graduates with disabilities. This event is the “first of its kind,” bringing together college students/grads with disabilities and employers to think about best practices around disability inclusion – TOGETHER.

The MN Department of Employment and Economic Development projects that there will be 100,000 unfilled jobs in the Twin Cities by the year 2020. In the state of Minnesota, 37% of college graduates with disabilities are unemployed. That’s over 10,000 highly educated candidates right here in the Twin Cities (16,000 people across the state) that are not being tapped. What’s going on? There are a number of reasons why companies do not hire people with disabilities – the most common are 1) they don’t know how and 2) perceptions/attitudes about disability. The state of Minnesota does not currently have an effective mechanism for facilitating this type of learning.

BetterWorkforce is a local, woman-owned business that aims to bridge the gap between college students/grads with disabilities and employers. We facilitate community workshops, provide customized training for employers, lead peer-learning cohorts, and host an annual event. 100% of our profits go toward building the talent pipeline by providing scholarships to support college students with disabilities either academically or with career training.

Competencies:

1. Attendees will meet college students, grads, and professionals with a variety of disabilities, including non-apparent disabilities.
