Chicago Dinners Dialogue Project brings diverse groups of people together to foster community discussions about critical social issues such as race and racism, and to create civic engagement throughout our communities. Since the first round of dinners were held on November, 1995, well over 15,000 people throughout the metropolitan of Chicago have participated as either a host or guest, in large or small parties held at the home of a total stranger, a place of worship or clubhouse. This dialogue model has been adopted by several other cities such as Flint, Michigan; Ottawa Hills, Ohio; Minneapolis and San Francisco. I have personally attended and facilitated a number of dinners for parents, teachers and schools across the country.

The Chicago Dinners is inspired by the belief that informal conversations among small groups of community leaders from different racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds is a vital step in bridging this nation’s racial divide. Our nation’s history of ignoring discussions about race cannot continue to be the background on which we consciously or unconsciously interact with people we deem “different” from us.

The Chicago Dinners presents an opportunity, for many the only opportunity, to sit down at a table with others who do not look or live like us, and talk honestly about important and sometimes awkward subjects such as race. From these conversations, we hope participants will act individually or in groups to break down the barriers that prevent our society from truly knowing and accepting each other.

You are invited to join us, as a fellow guest, for a great meal where the “main course” is race.

As a guest you play an important role by accepting the responsibility of participating in an open and honest conversation about race- our experiences, feelings, hopes and dreams. I believe this will be a wonderful opportunity for us to gather as people to talk about our common interests, such as Recovery, Health and Wellness in our own lives, with our children, and in our community.
