How We Think About Work is Broken: What Leaders Need to Know

Empirical evidence consistently shows that the profit leaders in industry after industry are the enterprises in which employees find meaning and engagement in what they do. Yet the overwhelming majority of adults throughout the world spend their work lives doing work they don't want to do in places they don't want to be.

The reason: the most prevalent ways that leaders and managers organize and manage work is based on a flawed understanding of human nature and motivation.  People work for many reasons other than money; yet for many situations the way we structure the work and our penchant for performance bonuses and external incentives undermines performance and crowds out more potent internal motivators.

The big question is “What can leaders do to improve the effectiveness of the workplace?”
