2017 Presentation Descriptions

January 14th – “Protecting our Water” with Dr. Joshua Lallaman

Freshwater resources are critically imperiled across the globe.  Minnesota is fortunate to contain more than 10,000 lakes and 100,000 stream miles that provide habitat for fish and wildlife, places for recreation, and opportunities for economic growth. Unfortunately, over half of these waters currently don't meet the Minnesota Pollution Control Agencies standards for recreational use.  Dr. Joshua Lallaman, Assistant Professor of Biology at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota will identify some of these major threats to freshwater and root causes of the problems.  The presentation will end with a discussion of how community members can engage with water conservation, protection, and stewardship.

Main Course: Smoked Duck Breast with Black Garlic Aioli

Dessert: Wild Rice Pudding with Wine-Soaked Cranberries

February 4th –  Information coming shortly!

March 4th – “Always a River Concert” with Ryan Lee

Enjoy an evening of acoustic songs and stories from Minnesota songwriter, Ryan Lee.  Ryan creates newfangled folk music full of humanity and heart. He has traveled around the world; writing, performing, teaching, creating and sharing his emotional songs of the human experience.

April 1st – “An Evening of Stories: from Ruffed Grouse to Action” with Larry Dolphin

Through teaching strategies using mimicry, props, slides, story, and song; the story will be told of a life long connection to the natural world and how those enjoyable experiences manifested into the very important imperative to help others share that passion about our planet so that we might sustain it for all life.

May 6th – “Locally Laid” with Lucie Amundsen

Lucie Amundsen joins us from Northern Minnesota to discuss her family's pratfall into chicken farming and the surprising hope they found in the mysterious, little known and poorly named segment of "middle agriculture." Lucie, a writer, marketer and reluctant farmer, co-owns Locally Laid Egg Company with her husband. Locally Laid Egg Company is a farm that provides pasture-raised eggs and partners with a total of seven other mid-level producers. These farms source and sell within their own regions to reduce food miles and strengthen local economies. Lucie uses her Masters in Creative Writing to ghostwrite for a chicken in her recent book Locally Laid, 2016 Midwest Choice Award in Nonfiction.
