Dinner Inspired by Zora
(1) Zora Neale Hurston was ABSOLUTELY committed to getting an education. In fact, she lied about her age so she could be eligible to attend night school in Baltimore, Maryland.
(2) At ZORA! Festival 2016, this “Dinner Inspired by Zora” event was well received. That program featured Dr. Fred Opie who had researched a recently published book titled Zora Neale Hurston on Florida Food, Remedies and Simple Pleasures. The menu for the buffet dinner was based on his book. Included in the audience were some 40 students, who clearly enjoyed themselves, which caused our organization to consider how to build upon the success of the program.
(3) Because the Association to Preserve the Eatonville, Community, Inc. (P.E.C.) is committed to supporting “educational excellence; we have determined to reconfigure this program as an annual, kick-off event to celebrate good students citizenship among students who attend Title I schools in Orange County.
We have determined to focus on students attending these schools, designated for their low socio-economic status, because our organization wants to provide the quality of encouragement which is so critical to the students’ ultimate success.
