Event description

Description

What happens when live storytelling and food collide?

A multi-sensory experience that encourages people to bridge cultural divides.

We will invite a cook to prepare a food dish that is connected to their fondest memory and tell a story about it. At the end of their story, the audience of 30 will taste the dish. Over the course of 12-months, we will host up to 10 dinners and will design a Detroit story cookbook.

Who is the featured storyteller?

We've invited Shane Bernardo and Sarap Detroit, A Filipino-inspired pop-up restaurant concept that celebrates the flavors of the Philippines by way of Michigan, to participate in this Filipino-style brunch.

Shane Bernardo grew up working in his family's grocery store on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. For over 13 years, Shane's family helped cultivate a nourishing environment for the South East Asian, West African and Afro-Caribbean cultures through culturally relevant foods, recipes, stories and traditions. Through these shared food staples and customs, Shane developed a heightened awareness of shared social, economic, political and historical conditions that his family had in common with others within a geographically, racially, ethnically and culturally stratified community.

Shane is also a long-life Detroit resident active within the grassroots food justice movement in Detroit. He has been a facilitator for Uprooting Racism Planting Justice, outreach coordinator for Earthworks Urban Farm, a board member for the Michigan Farmers Market Association, and a founding member of Swimming in the Detroit River, an environmental justice storytelling collective. Shane has also been awarded fellowships with the Center for Whole Communities, Environmental Leadership Program, Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, the Detroit Equity Action Lab, and Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture. Shane is an community organizer and facilitator that speaks and writes on food justice issues that lie at the intersections of food, health, healing and spirituality.

What is the dish?

Tocino spamsilog: A Filipino breakfast staple, silogs typically comprise a meat and rice dish topped with a fried egg. For this Dinner (Brunch) for 30 event, Sarap will be making its own version of Spam, flavored with a tocino rub (a mixture of annatto, sugar and salt), paired with a tomato and onion salad, garlic rice and fried egg. Vegetarian option includes jackfruit adobo (green jackfruit simmered in soy sauce, vinegar and coconut milk) served with tomato and onion salad, garlic rice and fried egg (egg can be removed for a vegan option).

Who is the cook?

Sarap is a pop-up restaurant concept that serves Filipino-inspired, from scratch, farm-to-table fare in southeast Michigan at pop-up dinner events in metro Detroit. We also cater private events such as birthday parties, weddings, etc. We're adding our own creativity and spin to the childhood favorites of Dorothy while staying true to the culture. We hope that by exploring Filipino food through our dinners and events, we can bring this underrated cuisine to a wider audience. Sarap is dedicated to the vision of a healthy, sustainable food system and aims to be a collaborative, active member of the broader food movement in Detroit by using as much local and seasonal ingredients as possible in its inspired interpretations; you can check out a list of some of the producers and farmers we work with here. By day (and sometimes night), Dorothy is a journalist and Jake is a chef.
