Description

Dinner & A DJ Volume 27: Nowruz

Menu by: Kia Karimi
Music by: Nima Skeemz

Nowruz takes place every year on the spring equinox throughout the Northern Hemisphere and for 3,000 years Iranians have celebrated the beginning of the New Year on this day. The beginnings of this wonderful cultural marker is hidden in the mist of prehistory, but despite its Iranian and Zoroastrian origins, Nowruz is a secular holiday that has been celebrated by diverse communities around the world.

Many rituals surround the celebration of this day for Iranians, but like many other cultural celebrations around the world, this one is also marked by the gathering of friends and family around a traditional feast of regional cuisine. The foods most closely associated with Nowruz include a variety of rich springy stews, fresh herbs, ripe vegetables, and wild fish. Eide Shoma Mobarak! (Happy New Year!)
