Event description

Description

Data analytics has become a crucial skill across several industries, whether you are entry-level, executive, or somewhere in between. Understanding data analytics can enable you and your organization to make better decisions with improved outcomes.

Dive into data analytics with DigitalC in the fall 2017 Data Analytics Workshop. The workshop will be held from October 10th to 12th and will include interactive lessons on analyzing data, accessing local data resources, and data visualization that will provide beginners with a toolkit for data analysis. The lessons will be taught by Kauser Razvi, Dan Giersz, Joshua Terchek, and Adam Hecktman.

All classes will be held in Fenn Hall on CSU campus. Each day runs from 9:00 to 2:30/3:00 with an hour lunch break.

Please note that classes will take place in the computer lab and you will be able to use a workstation, however, if you do have your own computer available then please bring it.

Please register and contact Kauser Razvi (kauser.razvi@digitalc.org) with any questions.

Day 1, October 10:

Intro to Data Analysis 101 (taught by Kauser Razvi) 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

  • Learn what exactly data analysis is, who can benefit from learning data analysis, examples of real-world contexts and applications, tools and tips for analyzing and communicating data, and how to design and answer data-driven questions.

Local Data Resources (taught by Dan Giersz) 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

  • Learn about the various GIS resources maintained and provided by the Cuyahoga County GIS Department: the new MyPlace Real Property application with the most up-to-date parcel information; the Cuyahoga Open Data Portal that allows you to download the data you need; public web services available through ArcGIS Online that you can use in your own applications; and the fully interactive GIS Web Mapping Application you can use to search our data, make professional quality maps, and download results. We also maintain an FTP server to distribute our very large datasets like aerial photography.

Day 2, October 11:

Excel for Data Analysis with Civic/Census Data (taught by Adam Hecktman, Microsoft) 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM

  • Excel is a tool that most people are familiar with, and many people use every day. Excel can be leveraged to unlock the value of open data of all kinds, and it is particularly well-suited to query and visualize open government data from multiple sources. Learn how to access, transform, cleanse, query, and visualize data using tools that are easy to learn and easy to use.

Day 3, October 12:
