Learn How To Become a Digital Storyteller
Storychaser phase 1 workshops are 2 day opportunities to learn the basics of creating a digital story using a "Digital Backpack" of supplies. Participants learn how to use portable audio recorders, microphones, audio editing software (Audacity) and video software (PhotoStory3 or iMovie) to create short, 3 - 5 minute videos using audio and still images. Approximately half of the workshop time is dedicated to individual project work. Participants KEEP their digital backpack equipment following the workshop. Our workshops in June 2013 are steeply discounted, because we are transitioning to iPad-based workshops and liquidating our remaining inventory of digital backpack gear. The original cost of the equipment participants will use and keep following our workshop is $250, so this workshop cost is exceptionally low and a fantastic value. Purchase orders are accepted for payment, please select "SHOW OTHER PAYMENT OPTIONS" below the PayPal logo above for more information.
Our current workshop agenda is available online, which provides an overview of activities.
Each day we start at 8:30 am, so please plan to arrive between 8 and 8:15 am to be ready for a prompt start. We end at 5 pm both days. Lunch is on your own and not provided, but we encourage participants to eat together in groups if possible.
Our workshop includes the following modules or blocks of instruction / activities:
Block 1: Digital Storytelling Overview
Block 2: Audio Recording Basics
Block 3: Digital Image Basics
Block 4: Independent Work Time
Block 5: Synchronizing Images and Audio: PhotoStory/iMovie

If possible, it's good to bring an idea for a digital story you'd like to share and create to the workshop. The digital story you create will use still images and audio narration, with optional background music. You will NOT simply be putting pictures to a song, you'll be writing a script and/or interviewing someone about their life to share an interesting story. The following two stories will give you an idea of some of the stories which previous workshop participants have created.
It is great if you can bring at least 5 to 10 photographs which relate to your story to the workshop. This is recommended but NOT required.
No pre-requisite technology skills are required to attend and participate in our workshop, but a basic familiarity with the Windows or Macintosh operating system will be helpful. Participants can bring their own laptops to the workshop. Windows-based desktop PCs will be provided for each participant who does not bring a laptop. Participants are welcome to bring Apple or Windows-based laptops. If you bring your own laptop, please install this list of free software programs BEFORE you arrive on day 1. Be sure you have the administrative password so you are able to modify system settings / install new software on your laptop.
All these programs are FREE. Unless otherwise advised, we recommend downloading STABLE (instead of BETA) versions of Audacity.
Audacity (multi-track audio editor)
Video Creation Software (combine still images with audio)
Optional Software (all free)
- Switch (audio conversion software, available for Windows and Macintosh, be sure to download the FREE version)
- Windows-Only: Combined Community Codec Pack
The following videos will give you an idea of some of the stories which previous workshop participants have created. Check out more on our Celebrate Oklahoma Voices learning community.
