Event description

Description

What is it about?

This event is about Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs), which are digital equivalents of traditional paper notebooks used by researchers to record their experimental strategy: date of experiments, purpose, methodology, step by step actions, notes about any issues experienced, key findings and many more.

The main problem with paper-based notebooks is that they are not searchable, which not only decreases research efficiency (when desperately trying to look for own notes, or, even worse, when a supervisor is trying to find something in hand-written notes left behind by a student) but also presents challenges to research reproducibility.

Digital notebooks provide a digital (searchable) alternative to paper-based traditional notebooks, and additionally offer lots of efficiency-saving integrations - with various cloud storage platforms, calendars and project management tools.

What is going to happen?

It is going to be a full-day event with lots of learning opportunities. There will be short presentations in the morning with case studies from people who use digital notebooks. Practical guidance on what to pay attention to when looking for the right solution will be also provided.

The afternoon will be interactive with hands-on demonstrations of several tools: you will be able to try them out and ask questions directly to the providers.

We will conclude with a joint feedback session.

Who should come?

  • Researchers, students and supervisors - who are interested in making their research digital
  • Research support staff - who want to learn more about Electronic Lab Notebooks and what do researchers need

What are the goals?

The goals of this event are to:

  • Discuss the pros and cons of Electronic Lab Notebooks
  • Learn what to look for when searching for the right tool
  • Get an opportunity to test out and start using Electronic Lab Notebooks
