Digital Inclusion Forum – Engaging the Tech Community

The digital divide is real. In San Antonio, nearly 1 in 6 households do not have a computer and nearly 1 in 4 do not have Internet access. This positions San Antonio among the 15 US cities with more than 100,000 households with ‘worst connectivity’. Because so many daily activities – from education, work, and financial services to civic engagement, healthcare, and social interaction require online access to accomplish, our San Antonio residents are at a severe disadvantage. If San Antonio is to be competitive in today’s digital economy, its citizens need online access and to be not only literate but proficient with this technology. Finally, the lack of digital access has a pervasive impact on the tech industry. The digital divide means fewer tech workers available to join the local workforce and fewer customers for San Antonio tech companies.

On September 25th, 2018 members of the Digital Inclusion Alliance of San Antonio (DIASA) and Tech Bloc as well as the UTSA College of Public Policy will convene a digital inclusion forum with the objective to engage the Tech Community in the issue. With the expected participation by the City of San Antonio, Goodwill Industries of San Antonio, San Antonio Housing Authority, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and other DIASA members, the forum will provide a platform for sharing ideas and strategies currently under consideration, along with an open dialog with San Antonio’s tech community regarding the state of digital inclusion.

The forum will touch on three key questions:

1. What is the state of the digital divide in San Antonio and how is it affecting our community?
2. What are some strategies and promising initiatives?
3. How can the Tech community get involved?

Confirmed speakers in the forum will include:

- Jo Ana Alvarado – Director Innovative Technology, SAHA – Increasing Digital Access through Innovative Technology Solutions
- Jordana Barton – Senior Advisor, Federal Bank of Dallas – State and Impact of the Digital Divide
- Craig Hopkins - CIO, City of San Antonio - Alignment with Smart City Initiative
- Steven Hussain – Chief Mission Services Officer, Goodwill - Workforce and Economic Mobility

This event will be facilitated by Matt Reedy – IT Technical Director, USAA - Involvement of a Tech Leader.
