Description

Digital Ethics Seminar

Presenter: Ofer Zur, Ph.D

Digital technology offers clinical and ethical challenges for those who provide face-to-face mental health services. These include extra-therapeutic contacts between therapists and their clients, questions about what distinguishes personal and professional activities online, dealing with clients’ online evaluations, the ethical and clinical issues involved when clients Google therapists and therapists Google clients, and a general lack of clearly developed policies in the field related to our online behaviors and interactions. This is particularly the case given that the technologies, and the related ethical and clinical complexities, continue to change at a rapid pace.

The course will also cover some of the most potent issues of digital ethics, such as therapists Googling clients, clients Googling therapists, use of video-conferencing with clients, practicing across state line, responding to clients’ negative reviews on Yelp, and some of the basics of telemental health. The course will review the most important aspects of the psychology of the web and how the Internet has changed our culture, our relationships and…our brains

Course Objectives:

  • Distinguish between one’s personal and professional activities on the Internet.
  • Identify the ethical challenges that may arise from engaging in activities on the Internet.
  • Develop strategies for minimizing risk of ethical violations on the Internet.
  • Construct a social media policy for one’s office to address potential boundary issues with clients.
  • Review the different approaches and attitudes towards social networking between therapists and clients.
  • Discuss the relevant ethical and clinical issues of therapist Googling clients with and without clients’ consent or knowledge.
  • Explore the clinical issue involved when clients Google their therapists and find different types and personal details about their therapists
