Event description
Documentary and panel discussion. Hosted by Eric Peterson!

About this Event

What is the impact of the Internet on Canada’s media sector, its physical spaces, and its sovereignty? And what does it mean for the upcoming federal election in October 2019?

Join us for a free documentary screening and panel discussion at Revue Cinema, hosted by Canadian TV legend Eric Peterson (Corner Gas, Street Legal).

7:00pm - Documentary Screening

Digital Disconnect is a documentary film that explores the crucial question of whether the connective potential of social media outweighs the damage it inflicts on our minds, our families, our society, and our democracy.

8:00pm - Panel Discussion

The film will be followed by a panel discussion about the crisis facing Canadian media and journalism, the creeping of unregulated Tech Firms into our physical spaces, and the impact of social media platforms on Canadian democracy.

Moderator: Daniel Bernhard - Executive Director, FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting

Panelists:

Dr. Lilian Radovac - Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and director of the Alternative Toronto digital community archive project.

Bahar Shadpour - Member of Fairbnb Canada, Communications Coordinator at the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO)

Nicole Cohen - Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and the author of Writers’ Rights: Freelance Journalism in a Digital Age (McGill-Queen’s University Press 2016).
