Digital Day on the Hill | 2019 |IRL

About this Event

IRL | In Real Life | Digital Day on the Hill 2019

Digital Day on the Hill teaches Democratic staff how to capture their Member’s voice through a combination of creative high-level panels, lightning fast talks with industry experts, and peer-to-peer breakout sessions. The day ends with a showcase reception that highlights member offices that are leading the way in digital innovation. Digital Day on the Hill gives congressional staff the power to bring these best practices back to their desks and begin implementing results on day one.

What Will You Learn?

Unlike most Capitol Hill and political briefings on digital strategy, we’ll be hearing directly from non-political successful practitioners who have built followings (and businesses) online, with the product being their knowledge, humor and ability to tell a story. These people will not be known for their politics, but their work in fashion, comedy, photography, gaming, food, music, and other fields.Just like these creators, your member is the product when you’re using you’re digitally communicating your message. We’re hoping that attendees improve their ability to tell a compelling story and that it sparks creativity throughout the Caucus.

How the Sports Industry Capitalizes on #IRL Moments

The sports industry consistently racks up views, likes, and other interactions on their platforms. How do they do it? By taking advantage of real-life moments. From game highlights, to behind-the-scenes, to ad campaigns highlighting the issues of today, the sports industry keeps their audiences in the know and entertained. This panel will bring together an extremely talented panel of social media gurus from local D.C. sports teams, athletic companies, sports networks, and even some athletes themselves to talk about how they are winning the social media game.

A Moment Like This: How to Capture an Idea and Amplify Your Message

On Capitol Hill, thoughtful legislation and good ideas often get lost in the Twitter universe and the 24-hour news cycle, leaving many of us in a constant struggle to build momentum around something that might have potential.

Capturing these ideas and moments can be hard enough even before trying to grab someone’s attention – and keeping it. In this panel we talk to people who were able to capture a moment and use their digital platform to build an audience and amplify their message successfully. We’re hearing from:

• a progressive rage-baker,

• the CEO of a company telling the stories of workers whose voices often remain unheard, and

• a journalist that inspired Kim Kardashian West to advocate for criminal justice reform

to learn about how you can leverage your authentic idea – or your boss’s – at the right time and create a moment that no one knew they were waiting for.

Internet Education IRL

A large part of our job is trying to translate complex policy into fun and engaging social content. Everyone loves a good explainer, but it’s easy to get lost in the details and creating simplicity can often end up getting complicated. Internet Education IRL connects you with information sharing experts to discuss their creative process and how you can better energize your boss’ policy game!

Digital Detox: Taking Your #SelfCare Offline

The Hill is a stressful place to work, and most of our jobs require us to be glued to our phones and computers all day. But our technology can actually help connect us to inspiration and relaxation if you know where to look—at least according to these #selfcare experts. The wellness trend has paved the way for these business owners and influencers to turn their digital platforms into a tool to help their followers get healthier, happier and balanced.
