Digital Darkroom: Adobe Lightroom 3-part Workshop- CO Springs

Adobe Lightroom provides the tools needed to bring photographs to their full potential; this three-part workshop introduces you to the power of Lightroom and will give you confidence in using it to see your photographic vision come to life!

This course introduces file organization methods for structuring your digital archive, a proven digital workflow for a searchable digital archive, taking photographs from camera-to-completion, and how Lightroom interacts with social media to seamlessly publish your work online, or prepare artwork for exporting, printing, and beyond.

This course will is taught in three sessions:

Session 1: Introduction to managing your digital archive and getting started with Adobe Lightroom

Covers structuring and organizing your personal digital archive to make finding and editing your photos easier. This broad overview of Lightroom includes: What Adobe Lightroom is and what it does, in general and how to take file from your camera and create your first catalog (import, organization, key wording, automated functions, metadata, and more).

Session 2: Editing your digital images and your digital darkroom toolbox

Includes a detailed overview of specific features and functions of the program:

Library, Develop, Map, Book, Slideshow, Print and Web modules will be introduced. In this sessions time will be spent covering, in detail, the Library and Develop module. The tools and strategies for taking images from camera to finished and polished photograph will be covered along with individual/group assignments, class feedback, and critique will be used to let students explore and experiment with these new skills. Students will be given a photographic assignment so that original work may be used in the third session.

Session 3: Moving Beyond the Edit

Begins with an in-class assignment reviewing over covered topics (camera-to-edit).

Following the assignment the class will be dedicated to the features of Adobe Lightroom that make it, not just a powerful editing tool, but an essential tool for a contemporary digital artist. In this session, the Map, Book, Slideshow, Print, and Web module will be covered in detail. The emphasis will be on how Adobe Lightroom can be used in conjunction with social media (ex: Facebook, Flickr, and Behance), desktop publishing, creating web galleries to share with family and friends, and other ways these expanded tools make sharing and distributing your artwork easier.

More Information

Please arrive to class with:

  • Computer/Laptop with power cord
  • Current or recent version of Adobe Lightroom (Download free trial of Adobe CC here)
  • Digital Media card with image files (when in doubt, bring more pictures than less)
  • External storage device is recommended, but not required
  • Digital card reader and transfer cable, if applicable
  • Pen and paper

Students are be responsible for providing their own versions of Lightroom, laptop/computer and power cords and other required hardware, original photographs, and have the ability to make new photographs for a class assignment. Reasonable accommodations will be made to ensure that students will have access to outlet power so that computers and laptops will not be dependent upon their batteries.

This class covers A LOT of information; taking notes and asking questions is strongly encouraged in order to get the most out of this learning opportunity. Also, because so much information will be covered in detail, the classes are 2 hours in length, there will be breaks incorporated into the class structure. The course will generally include lecture, hands on demonstration, group, individual, and whole class activities, group discussions, and individual feedback.

About your Instructor

This course is taught by M. David Farrell, Jr. He has a background in commercial, wedding, and fine art photography.

He is a recent addition to the Mike’s Camera family and to Colorado Springs. Before moving to Colorado David earned a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Southern Illinois University, a Bachelor of Arts in photography from the University of South Carolina and taught both digital and darkroom photography, black and white and color, journalism, studio lighting, video production, documentary and narrative, and digital retouching at Southern Illinois University and Digital Art at Brehm Preparatory School in Illinois. David is still an active artist taking consignments and producing personal work which is shown nationally.
