Event Details

Hey early childhood educators! Come experience the Farm’s garden, forest, or farm animals and explore how to utilize them to help your students connect to the land wherever they are. You’ll discover how to bring these connections back to your classroom and everyday curriculum for place-based learning at its best! Choose your track for the day to fully immerse yourself. Each track offers endless opportunities for learning!

Please note that you will pick one track during the registration process. This will help support a stronger learning community and give participants ample time for experiential learning, discussion, and peer networking.

Forest - Working to Play

Spend the morning in the outdoor classroom, immersing yourself in the possibilities of learning through play in the forest. We will be down on the ground looking for critters, creating in a mud kitchen, and learning about forest animals through role playing and games. Discuss how to use the forest as a place for teaching empathy, diversity, safety, and a whole lot more. In the afternoon, we’ll discuss how to bring the morning’s learning experiences into your curriculum, how to involve families and community members, and safety.

Garden - Growing our Learning

Spend the morning working in the Market Garden to explore the learning possibilities of gardens. Bring your sharp eyes to look for the details of plants and for the critters that live on and around those plants. In the afternoon, we will revisit some of our morning experiences, discussing the potential of community supported gardens, learning gardens, and year-round gardening, as well as the tension between production and learning in the garden, and any other topics that come up.

Dairy - Milk and More

Head to our working dairy to discover our food and fiber connections to farm animals. Build your knowledge and discuss how you can incorporate these important agricultural connections into your classroom. You’ll also visit a variety of animals in our Children’s Farmyard that provide us with food and fiber (rabbit, sheep, goats and lambs). (You may find one that you want take home!) In the afternoon, we’ll explore the challenges of transportation and how you can build farm connections into your classroom without being at the farm. Discuss state programs that connect our farms to classrooms, as well as safety concerns and involving families in the learning.
