Digging Deeper into Text Types and Purposes in Informative/Explanatory Writing in the Common Core for Grades K-5
Delve into W.1.2 by examining the grade level anchor standard in informative/explanatory writing across grades K-5. Participants will have the opportunity to develop pre-assessment pieces for informative/explanatory units in the spirit of Writing Workshop, gather and write immersion pieces with traits germane to informational writing, map out mini-lessons for the unit, use student writing samples as text exemplars and form post-assessment pieces.
Deirdre Spollen-Laraia is a former K-12 ELA, ESL and Gifted and Talented supervisor who is currently serving as principal of the Hawthorne Elementary School in Teaneck, NJ. She recently received an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the College of St. Elizabeth. Her dissertation topic was: Literacy Coaching: Is it a Link to Transforming Teacher Collaboration, School Culture and Student Achievement? Deirdre is an experienced staff developer with expertise in ELA curriculum development, instruction and assessment.
Deirdre’s workshops will be held from 8:00-2:00 in Hutchinson Hall Room 306 at the Kean University, Union Campus. A continental breakfast will be served and participants may bring a brown bag lunch.
