Event description

Description

Difret (Courage) is a new feature film by two Ethiopian filmmakers that chronicles the extraordinary story of a 14-year-old Ethiopian girl who was abducted for marriage and the lawyer who fights for her rights. The story that unfolds, based on actual events, is a powerful tale of the clash between traditional practices and modern notions of human rights.

Opening remarks by Professor Malcolm Potts of the OASIS Initiative. The evening will close with a brief presentation by Dr. Daniel Perlman, a medical anthropologist who founded the Center for Girls' Education in northern Nigeria. Dr Perlman will explain how his project helps adolescent girls realize their educational aspirations and reproductive rights, as part of a wider effort to support women's rights in the Sahel region of Africa.
