Robert Schumann's seminal song cycle "Dichterliebe," for tenor and piano, acts as a backdrop where the roles of protagonist, beloved and the universal all intertwine. What is personal and what is mythic come into question in the song/dance meditation.
Sets are by Chicago based artist Rufino Jiminez

Originally written for string orchestra and soprano, Benjamin Britten's "Les Illuminations de Rimbaud" includes nine of the possible 42 poems in Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations. Although Rimbaud technically predates surrealism, the style and themes contained within Illuminations are perceived as surrealistic due to the fantastic, hallucinatory quality of the text, possibly influenced by the poet's use of hashish. The text is thick with sensory imagery and contains themes of urban chaos and the savage, beautiful and theatrical nature of humanity. A majority of the poems were written while Rimbaud lived in the UK with his then partner, poet Paul Verlaine, which accounts for several of the poems' English titles. Britten's piece was premiered in 1940, approximately 70 years after Rimbaud wrote the poems.

Performances include an art exhibit by Jiminez and reception immediately following.
