This will be the final event for the 2016 season of ICON Lecture Series. The overarching theme of the 2016 season has been "Crash Courses on Current Crises". This event will draw on Diana West's pivotal studies of the sources and techniques being used in the ongoing demolition of American institutions and culture. The roles of the Frankfurt School and of cultural Marxism will be examined. Work by West on other aspects of these issues is planned to be included.
Diana West is a nationally syndicated conservative American columnist and author. Her weekly column, which frequently tackles controversial subjects such as the impact of Islam and the failures of counterinsurgency strategy (COIN), appears in about 120 newspapers and news sites. She is the author of two major ground-breaking books. 1. The Death of the Grown Up: How America's Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization(St. Martin's Press) was written in 2007. This investigative study diagnosed the demise of Western civilization by looking at its chief symptom: our inability to become adults who render judgments of right and wrong. These insights have become more and more important in the attempts to understand current entitled and demanding behaviors on US campuses. 2. In 2013 she published American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation's Character (St. Martin's Press). In it West digs deeper to discover the root of the disintegration of the culture of the Western world and uncovers a body of lies that Americans have been led to regard as the near-sacred history of World War II and its Cold War aftermath. Diana West focused on the World War II--Cold War deal with the devil in which America surrendered her principles in exchange for a series of Big Lies whose preservation soon became the basis of our leaders' own self-preservation. It was this moral surrender to deception and self-deception, West argues, that sent us down the long road to moral relativism, "political correctness," and other cultural ills that have left us unable to ask the hard questions: Does our silence on the crimes of Communism explain our silence on the totalitarianism of Islam?
West has contributed essays and features to The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, The Washington Post, The New Criterion, The Public Interest, and The Women's Quarterly. She has also been a columnist for The Washington Times, Scripps Howard News Service and United Media. As a former CNN contributor, West frequently appeared on CNN's Lou Dobbs show.
