Workshop Overview:

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a branch of cognitive behavioral therapy developed by Marsha Linehan over 30 years ago to help people manage difficult emotions. DBT combines individual therapy sessions with group skills training to increase a client’s self-awareness and capability to tolerate distress, manage emotions, communicate more effectively, and maintain healthy relationships.

This workshop will teach you how to use DBT concepts, techniques, and skills with your individual clients. DBT techniques can bring clients enhanced self-awareness, motivation for change, and the tools they need to tolerate difficult situations. DBT can also provide clinicians with an effective format to draw from in combination with various therapeutic techniques from other evidenced based practices to best help our clients’ individual needs. (Note: This is not a comprehensive DBT training and is not affiliated with Marsha Linehan)

Learning Objectives:

Overview of DBT including a brief history, DBT modes, diary card, levels of commitment, commitment strategies, hierarchy of treatment, and treatment objectives.

Examine how to use DBT in individual therapy sessions.

Understand dialectics and dialectical interventions.

Learn the ‘Three States of Mind’ and how to teach Wise Mind to your clients.

Apply the How and What skills of Mindfulness to individual sessions.

Use Chain Analysis to help clients gain more insight and stop problem behaviors.

Integrate DBT techniques with specific client populations such as teens, parents, addictions, eating disorders and more.

About the Presenters:

Meghan Flaherty, LCSW and Laurie Wilmot, LCSW, CADCIII met while working at a wilderness therapy school for teenagers in Central Oregon 13 years ago, where they were trained in DBT and created the first DBT based wilderness curriculum in the country. Laurie and Meghan co-founded Sage Behavioral Counseling in 2009, where they teach DBT skills groups for adults, teens, and parents; consult with and conduct trainings for local programs around DBT interventions; do clinical supervision for social workers; and see individual clients. Laurie and Meghan find working together builds their enthusiasm for their work, their effectiveness in teaching and doing therapy, and is just much more fun.

Both presenters have worked in a variety of clinical settings including community mental health clinics, residential treatment centers, schools, crisis response teams, drug and alcohol programs, non- profit organizations, and the wilderness. Both Laurie and Meghan are trained in the Gottman method of couples counseling, Meghan is trained in EMDR, and Laurie has a strong background in alternative addictions treatment. Meghan and Laurie love working together and this shows in their enthusiasm for their work!

FAQs

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Questions can be directed to bendworkshop@yahoo.com

What is the refund policy?

Registration fee will not be refunded for cancellations as of one week prior to the scheduled event, or for no-shows. Prior to that, a $25 cancellation fee will be assessed.

Is there a parking fee at OSU Cascades campus?

Yes there is parking fee, however, COAP will cover the cost of parking as a courtesy tied to this conference. Please park in the main OSU parking lot. You will need to supply us your license plate number and state of plate upon workshop check-in if you would like us to pay for your parking.

Why is COAP using Eventbrite?

COAP is utilzing this new system to register as the officers have had many requests thru the years for the ability to pay online and for people to be able to pay with a credit card. It has reduced the load on the officers for the event for 2/22, which is the first conference using this system. There is a fee that Eventbrite imposes and the officers took this fee into consideration upon setting the fees for the conference. COAP is absorbing the fee imposed by Eventbrite for the 5/10 conference.
