Event description

Description

The Book Stall is pleased to present renowned artist and author Patti Smith, discussing her inspired exploration of the nature of creative invention, Devotion, in the historic Music Box Theatre in Chicago.

Join us for an evening with writer, performer, and visual artist Patti Smith, celebrating the publication of her new book, Devotion. She will read from and discuss the new book, and all attendees will receive a copy.

A work of creative brilliance may seem like magic—its source a mystery, its impact unexpectedly stirring. How does an artist accomplish such an achievement, connecting deeply with an audience never met? In the groundbreaking Devotion, one of our culture’s beloved artists offers a detailed account of her own creative process, inspirations, and unexpected connections. Whether writing in a café or a train, Smith generously opens her notebooks and lets us glimpse the alchemy of her art and craft in this arresting and original book on writing.

Patti Smith's memoir Just Kids received a National Book Award, and her recent book M Train is a critically acclaimed New York Times best-seller. Smith was awarded the prestigious title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the French Republic. Her seminal album Horses has been hailed as one of the top one hundred albums of all time, and in 2007 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She lives in New York City.

FAQs

Will my book be signed?

Due to a wrist injury, Ms. Smith will not be autographing books at this event. She will read from and talk about her new work. All attendees will receive a copy of her new book, Devotion.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking can be tricky, if possible we recommend taking the Red Line (Addison Stop), Brown Line (Southport stop), or the Irving Park, Addison, or Clark Street buses.

Southport is a metered parking street. Free street parking is available on and west of Ashland Ave (two blocks west of the theatre) and north of Irving Park. There is a parking lot at nearby Blaine Elementary and valet parking at the Mercury Theatre and Deleece Restaurant.
