Event description

The National Standard Instructor four day course and runs from 25th to 28th July 2017, 9 a.m. to 5pm at Sir John Hunt Community Sports College Plymouth PL5 4AA. Report to Woodview reception on arrival.

It costs £549 which includes one free Post Course Assessment in Devon, when undertaken within six months of the four day course.

It is the only professional qualification available for individuals to deliver National Standard Cycle Training (Bikeability). Most instructors who achieve the qualification go on to deliver Bikeability to children in schools, however instructors can train adults too. The course is 50% practical (on busy roads) and 50% classroom based.

The course covers all aspects of cycle training inc:

Exploring the three levels of National Standard Cycle Training and how to deliver them
Bike and helmet check and fitting
Risk assessment
Child protection awareness
Being an effective instructor
Giving feedback to trainees
Being an assertive cyclist

Successful? You’ll be awarded provisional National Standard Instructor status (NSIP). At this point you can start delivering Level 1, 2 or 3 National Standard cycle training to groups or individuals or you can start delivering Bikeability training on behalf of a registered Bikeability scheme.

Within six months of being awarded provisional National Standard Instructor status, you will need to undertake a Post Course Assessment. This will be undertaken in Devon(cost already included) by one of our Trainers and will be one observed on-road session, usually training children.

Once you have met the Post Course Assessment criteria you will progress to full qualified instructor status (NSIQ).

What are the pre-course requirements for all participants?

18 years or older

Be able to cycle confidently especially on busy roads

Willingness to participate in all aspects of the course so will need to have excellent communication skills especially as most instructors will go on to to deliver Bikeability to children in schools.

Is there a minimum number required for the course to go ahead?

For the exercises and course to work effectively and financially there does need to be at least four participants .In the unlikely event of the course being cancelled participants will be refunded.

What should I be reading prior to the course?

The course manual we will be working from is the Bikeability Delivery Guide available to download for free on the Bikeability website therefore we strongly recommend you print off a copy as an early understanding of Bikeability will help you. Also you will find the Bikeability Plus documents very useful. Consider reading Cyclecraft by John Franklin too.

Instructors are very high profile and should set a good example so ensure sure you are familiar with the Highway Code and in particular the Rules for Cyclists section. There is a quiz during the course!

What should I bring to the course?

Your bicycle, with front and rear lights, and helmet.

Bike lock

Suitable clothing - we will be outside for approx 50% of the time - so consider English weather e.g. sun cream, waterproofs, gloves, change of clothing.

Lunch and refreshments

Is this a pass or fail course?

Yes. Working as a National Standard Instructor carries a weight of responsibility and our trainers will work closely with you to give you the tools and skills which, historically, results in most particpants passing.

What happens if I miss a day?

Unfortunately, there is rarely any capacity to 'catch up' and therefore participants will not pass and no refund will be given.

What are included in the costs?

Four day course AND one Post Course Assessment in Devon, within six months of the four day course.
Course manual and training materials.

Is this a training course and an offer of work?

It is a training course however if you are interested in delivering Bikeability in Devon, please email

Do you have bikes we can borrow?

I am afraid not. We recommend participants bring their own bikes so they are familiar with them and won't have any unexpected mechanical issues.
