Event description

Description

A 3-Day *Certificate Training for anyone who works with people with developmental disabilities and wants to lead sexuality education classes and staff/parent trainings.

March 4-6, 2020 - Decatur, GA

*Social Workers can get 17 CE hours (see FAQ for details)

Following the training, participants will have the skills and resources to lead:

  • Sexuality education series for people with developmental disabilities

  • Staff trainings on how to address sexuality one-on-one with people with developmental disabilities

  • Parent workshops on “How to Talk with your Kids about Sexuality.”

Increase your skill and comfort level when addressing sexuality with people with developmental disabilities.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get the training and support you need to make a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

The goal of this training is to train an employee to become your agency’s or school's staff/parent trainer and sexuality educator. This person will become more confident and comfortable leading sexuality education classes for people with developmental disabilities as well as train staff and parents either one on one or in groups, so they can promote the sexual health of individuals with developmental disabilities. You will leave with new knowledge and skills, and 3 curriculum with handouts and teaching tools so you can begin as soon as you return to work following the training.

*You will receive a certificate of attendance or, if you pass an assessment following the workshop, a certificate of completion. This certificate does not make you a certified sexuality educator and trainer.

Here's what our students say:

"This was the most well taught course of instruction and materials I’ve attended in years. Totally current and relevant, Exceeded my expectations 100%. The quality of any energy experience in this course was of such high caliber that I would recommend it to any person serving the DD population."

"I learned a lot of different presentation techniques as well as different ways to keep the flow of a training going. I liked absolutely everything about the training. Honestly, it was the best training that I have ever attended. I loved the content and presentation. I can’t wait to implement."

"I learned that I have the ability to train co-workers, parents, and clients about this topic. I liked that it was comfortable. The training was very informative. The curriculum is clear, easy to use, and thorough. When I return to work I am going to discuss this training with my supervisor and implement ASAP."

Training Description

When it comes to talking about sexuality, people with disabilities are often excluded, almost as if they are incapable of having sexual thoughts, feelings and needs. In reality, they too are sexual beings who need the information and skills for making healthy decisions about sexuality. Though agencies and schools who work with people with developmental disabilities know that sexuality issues need to be addressed, they don't necessarily feel comfortable or competent enough to do so. This workshop will give you the curriculum, tools, and skills to teach sexuality education classes and lead staff/parent trainings.

Objectives

As a result of this training, you will be able to:

  • Describe how to help people with disabilities become sexual self-advocates

  • Identify our own values and attitudes and how those impact your ability and effectiveness in teaching this topic

  • Explain what makes it difficult for staff and parents to talk about sexuality with consumers and discuss solutions to those barriers

  • List ways to teach this topic with other agency staff, parents, and people with disabilities

  • Demonstrate effective training techniques to use with staff, parents, and people with disabilities
