Description

A 3-Day Certificate Training for anyone who works with people with developmental disabilities and wants to become an expert.

November 15-17, 2017 - Worcester, MA

Increase your skill and comfort level when addressing sexuality with people with developmental disabilities.

Here's what our students say:

"I learned a lot of different presentation techniques as well as different ways to keep the flow of a training going. I liked absolutely everything about the training. Honestly, it was the best training that I have ever attended. I loved the content and presentation. I can’t wait to implement."

"I learned that I have the ability to train co-workers, parents, and clients about this topic. I liked that it was comfortable. The training was very informative. The curriculum is clear, easy to use, and thorough. When I return to work I am going to discuss this training with my supervisor and implement ASAP."

Following the training, participants will have the skills and resources to lead:

• Staff trainings on how to address sexuality one-on-one with consumers
• Sexuality education series for people with developmental dis
abilities
• Parent workshops on “How to Talk with your Kids about Se
xuality.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to get the training and support you need to make a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

The goal of this training is to train an employee to become your agency’s or school's staff/parent trainer and sexuality educator. This person will become more confident and comfortable educating people with developmental disabilities, either one on one or in groups, and also lead staff and parents workshops so they are better able to address this topic. You will not only leave with new knowledge and skills, but a curriculum with handouts and teaching tools so you can begin as soon as you return to work following the training.

When it comes to talking about sexuality, people with disabilities are often excluded, almost as if they are incapable of having sexual thoughts, feelings and needs. In reality, they too are sexual beings who need the information and skills for making healthy decisions about sexuality. Though agencies who work with people with developmental disabilities know that sexuality issues need to be addressed, they don't necessarily feel comfortable or competent enough to do so.

Objectives

As a result of this training, you will be able to:

  • Explain what makes it difficult for agency staff to talk about sexuality with consumers and discuss solutions to those barriers
  • Describe how to help people with disabilities become self-advocates
  • List ways to teach this topic with other agency staff, parents, and people with disabilities
  • Understand our own values and attitudes and how those impact your ability and effectiveness in teaching this topic
  • Practice effective training techniques to use with staff, parents, and people with disabilities
