Event description

Description

Join us for Development and Climate Days 2018 - two days of informal discussion and dialogue linking climate change and development.

Development and Climate Days (D&C Days) is an annual event for people attending the Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The gathering brings together practitioners, negotiators, scientists and policymakers to explore key issues, share best practice, disseminate news, literature and reports, and promote links between development and climate.

Attendance is free and open to everyone attending COP24 in Katowice.

This year's themes

The 2018 D&C Days programme will focus on four themes related to 'Global ambition. Local action. Climate resilience for all'. These are:

Resilience through empowerment: exploring the effective pathways to empowering the most vulnerable when responding to the emerging opportunities and risks of our world and its rapidly changing climate
Valuing lived experience and local knowledge: highlighting the opportunities that local and traditional knowledge give us to inform local, regional and national policy discussions related to climate and development
Transparency and downward accountability: examining the ways in which decisions are made, climate responses are prioritised and climate finance is directed to ensure it delivers the intended benefits to vulnerable populations and supports a more robust global stocktake for adaptation
Financing adaptation and managing risk: championing solutions that remove barriers to prevent climate finance reaching those more vulnerable to climate change, while integrating risk management approaches to help improve resilience.

Within these themes, D&C Days will be tackling big questions, seeking effective and practical answers, and working together on fair solutions. Through creative activities and interactive discussion, we will consider a series of complex questions, including:

What steps can local, business, and civil society take to boost action in developing and developed countries?
How can we build resilience in the face of increasing fragility and vulnerability to conflict in a way that promotes stability and peace?
Science based engagement – how can we get the data out there?
What novel approaches are needed to address climate risks and vulnerability in today's rapidly urbanising places?

Alongside our programme of sessions (PDF) D&C Days will also host the “Tea with 1.5°C” video installation and an art exhibit by Karolina Sobecka on Post Production Food.

The 1.5°C Climate Cafe will transport you to Haiti, where you’ll hear the voices of farmers, pastors, business women, and young people. They share how food, water, landscape and livelihoods have changed since they were kids. And what makes them hopeful for the future. Then you can add your voice, and help reveal the human faces of 1.5°C.

The Field Remediation: Salvage art installation is a collection of books, recipes, and objects from sites of the Polish food system, and a set of activities that puts Silesians and COP participants in direct dialogue. The collection is distributed in food delivery vehicles in Silesia: catch a ride to the conference in one of these mobile libraries, and sample and learn about the past and the future of the Polish fermentation microbiota, wine industry, food preservation techniques and other wild possibilities of salvage.

About attending

How do I get there?

Hotel Diament Arsenal Palace is situated between Katowice and Chorzow, next to the Silesian Park. It is a 20-minute drive from Katowice airport and a 20-minute tram journey from the Spodek Conference Centre where COP24 will be hosted (take line 6, 11 or 19 which all stop directly outside the hotel).

Do I need to bring a ticket to get in?

When you register you will get a confirmation email with a PDF attachment that is your ticket. Please present this ticket when you arrive. You can either print out the PDF ticket or keep the email on your mobile phone and show us the attachment when you arrive. Tickets are not transferrable.

This event is popular and is over subscribed to help us ensure a full house on the day. So admission is on a first-come, first-served basis for those with tickets. Not everyone who books uses their ticket so, to ensure a full house, we offer more tickets than there are places. Please arrive in good time to avoid disappointment as we may not be able to admit latecomers.

Is there disabled access?

Hotel Diament Arsenal Palace has disabled access to the venue in all areas. The event is all on the ground floor, and there is step-free access from the entrance to the conference rooms.

What language will D&C Days use?

D&C Days will be delivered in English. Unfortunately, at this time translation services are not available.

Where I can contact the organisers with questions?

If you have any questions about attending, please email us at this address: dandcdayscop@gmail.com.

Participation at own risk

D&C Days strives to create an environment that is interactive and engaging in order to stimulate dialogue with our participants. This year we will be hosting sessions that evolve around activities such as cookery, theatre performances and comedy, with physical and interactive elements. We have done everything to ensure our sessions have high levels of health and safety, however participants take part in these sessions at their own risk, and D&C Days cannot take responsibility for any injury sustained by individuals while participating.

Sustainability

The Development & Climate Days 2018 partners are committed to promoting sustainable development. To reduce the environmental impact of this event we are strongly encouraging participants to avoid distribution of printed publications and increase electronic distribution where appropriate.
