Focus – Research supervision is aimed at producing a thesis as well as a researcher. Many HDRs struggle with the writing, and it’s not always easy to see how to help them become more efficient and effective authors. This workshop explores a range of writing practices and pedagogies to develop the written communication of novice researchers. We explore common assumptions about writing to consider what works and what is unhelpful. After examining a range of approaches to developing writing, we look at some common problems facing novice research writers and strategies for dealing with them.

Lead – Dr Cally Guerin is a member of the Researcher Development and HDR Supervision Development teams at ANU. She has been teaching, researching and publishing on doctoral education since 2008, working with both HDR supervisors and students to develop effective research practices. She is a founding co-editor of the Doctoral Writing blog.
