Developing Research Data Management Services

As research data management is increasingly seen as a vital component of high-quality research, academics are looking to their institutions to provide support for activities which they lack the skills and resource to deliver themselves. The responsibility of institutions to provide support is being reflected in research funder mandates more explicitly. Coupled with this is the recognition that well-managed, visible research outputs, including data, are an asset both to researchers and their institutions.

Through practical exercises, participants will work in groups to take a holistic view of their current or planned RDM services. They will learn how to link service design and development with national and institutional strategy, ensuring that research goals are supported whilst complying with funders’ mandates. Participants will work with tools that facilitate business planning to identify the value of RDM services, and will learn strategies to communicate these benefits to a range of stakeholder groups.

By working collaboratively, participants will also enjoy the benefit of shared experiences in service development from a variety of national and institutional contexts. This event will offer an opportunity to network with colleagues from across the European higher education sector.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at librarians, senior researchers, administrators and technology support professionals with a stake in the development, review and redesign of institutional support for research data management. Participants will gain practical knowledge on how to scope, implement, refine and sustain their RDM services, and will be given pointers to useful open source tools and resources.
