Developing Comprehensive Exercise Programs for Patients with Primary or Secondary Cardiovascular Dysfunction

Every patient is a cardiovascular patient! And every patient with some kind of cardiovascular compromise deserves a high level of clinical competency from his or her rehabilitation professional, regardless of the therapy discipline (PT, OT, SLP). This course is based on the premise that the cardiovascular system should be considered as well as common co-morbidities found in individuals with cardiovascular dysfunction. In addition, evidence-based practice demands that treatment interventions be based on thorough patient assessment. This course will link the identified assessment findings to a sound clinical decision-making process to choose the best practice treatment interventions in order to reach the best functional outcomes. This course is applicable to all three rehabilitation disciplines: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
1. Identify primary and secondary cardiovascular conditions as well as implications of co-morbidities.
2. Discuss the pathophysiology that may affect patients’ responses to functional activities (Mobility; BADLs and IADLs; Communication and Swallowing).
3. Discuss appropriate clinical decision making for functional activities based upon medical record data, interview and physical assessment.
4. Identify key cardiovascular medications and modify treatment plan based upon medications and their effect on vital signs and symptoms.
5. Identify appropriate monitoring tools for functional activities and justify the need for monitoring with activities, including appropriate documentation. Modify monitoring based upon patient’s medications.
6. Determine normal versus abnormal responses to functional activities and make appropriate adjustments to plan of care based upon responses.
7. Identify appropriate assessment tools to identify patients’ tolerance to functional activities that reflect their functional limitations and assist in identifying need for interventions.
8. Analyze patients’ medical history, medications and any other pertinent information to develop appropriate interventions that safely progress patients towards optimal outcomes.
9. Identify appropriate outcome measures for patients in all practice settings, including appropriate functional tests to determine change.
10. Interpret responses from cases studies and discuss best practice documentation.
