LobangClub is all about a community of people helping each other find great bargains. We crowdsource products and prices from the community and then connect people with the products they are looking for.

An important step is to be able to categorize products contributed by our community. While we can ask our community to help with the categorization process, realistically it is quite a chore and isn't something we want to burden our community with. Reducing chores means a happier community.

So we decided to hold a developer challenge to find out how accurately a machine is able to categorize products. For example "Sony Playstation 3 Ps3 Slim 320G" might be categorized as a "Game Console" and "Electronics", "Nature valley granola bars" might be "Energy bars" and

At the start of the contest we would provide access to a substantial set of training data. The training set will comprise of product names mapped to categories as crowdsourced from the community. The challenge is to produce an algorithm to read the training set and then categorize products from another "competition set" as accurately as possible. A score will be produced based on how accurately your algorithm categorizes products from the competition set.

We will be giving away The New iPad (iPad 3) to the winner with the highest score at the close of the competition. All participants will be given an opportunity to present their solutions to the other

Who can participate:

1.0 The competition is open to anyone currently residing in the Philippines and is able to attend the presentation event in Manila.

1.1. Participants may enter either as individuals or teams. In the case of teams a single individual should be responsible for any communication between the team and LobangClub. In case of any prizes or awards it is recommended any teams determine ahead of time how the prizes would be shared among the members.

1.2. To be eligible participants should register before the start of the Term. Participants who do not register by the start of the Term may be eligible at the discretion of LobangClub.

2.0 The contest begins April 16, 2012 and will continue for 1 month

3.0 To register as an individual, the individual should provide: full name
and email address

3.1 To register as a team participants should provide a Team Name, a list of all team members, the team representative and each participant's full name and email address.

3.2 During the Term of the competition the Participant Alias Name ( in the case of individuals ) or the Team name ( in the case of teams ) may be revealed to other participants / teams.

4.0 The participant should be prepared to present their solution to other participants at the award

4.1 The algorithm should be originally developed or implemented.

4.2 The algorithm should not depend on nor invoke any Third Party software or APIs unless specifically authorized by LobangClub.

4.3 LobangClub must be able to successfully run the submitted program in accordance with (Section 5) Operation of the Competition.

4.4 The participant agrees to grant access and use of algorithms and source code produced in connection with the Developer Challenge to LobangClub.

Operation of the Competition:

5.0 The challenge is to produce software to correctly associate products into appropriate categories based on the name of the product.

For example "Ice lemon tea" is associated with 'Drinks', "Smith's Thinly Cut Potato Chips Thai Sweet Chilli " might be associated with "snacks" and "potato chips"

5.1. At the start of the challenge Term participants will be provided with 2 files:

File 1 ( Categories File ) will contain the entire list of possible categories

File 2 (Training Set ) will contain a fairly large set of training data containing product title to category mapping,

For example:
"Meiji 0% Fat Milk","Giant"
"Meiji 0% Fat Milk","Dairy"
"Listerine Total Care","Dental"
"Colgate Sensitive Multi Protection 120g","Toothpaste"
"Korea Popcorn Butter And Cheese","Korean Snacks"
5.1.1 A sample program will also be provided to demonstrate a very simplistic approach that will
serve as a baseline.

5.2 The participants will submit a program to read the Training Set and Categories File files. The program then takes File 3 ( the Competition Set ) containing only a list of Product Titles. The program then must output a file in the same format as the Training Set that maps the Product Titles in the competition set to all applicable categories in the Categories File. The contents of the Competition Set will not be known to the participants and will only be revealed at the conclusion of the competition.

5.3 The algorithm may be implemented in the language of the participants choosing as long as LobangClub is able to independently execute the program.

5.4 Starting from the beginning of the Term of the competition participants may begin to submit their algorithms at the maximum frequency of 1 submission per day per participant. Upon submission of the algorithm LobangClub will run the submission against the the Competition Set. The participant will receive feedback on the score achieved by their submission.

5.5 The current scores of the teams will be visible to all teams via a Leaderboard.

5.6 Algorithms will be scored as follows:

5.6.1 2 points shall be awarded for each product matched to the category as contributed by the
5.6.2 1 point shall be awarded for each additional correct category

5.6.3 2 points shall be deducted for each incorrect category

For example:
"San Miguel Light" , "Beer"
"San Miguel Light" , "Bottled Drink"
Would receive a score of 3 if "Beer" is a category as defined by the community and "Bottled
Drink" is an additional correct category.
The following entry would receive a score of -2:
"San Miguel Light" , "Light Bulb"

Awards and Prizes:

6.0 The participant with the algorithm with the highest score at the end of the competition Term will be the winner and awarded with The New iPad (iPad 3).

6.1 The top ten scorers will be awarded an exclusive LobangClub T-Shirt.
