Deus, qui Beatum Marcum!
Andrea Gabrieli (1532/3 - 1585)
Missa Pater Peccavi and motets
Pre-Concert Lecture - 7:00 PM
Often overlooked in favor of his more famous nephew Giovanni, Andrea Gabrieli is, nevertheless, a significant figure in the development of the Venetian style. Widely traveled and influenced by the great Orlande de Lassus, he returned to Venice and was appointed to the prestigious post of organist at the Basilica of San Marco in 1566. Though a prolific composer of powerful ceremonial music and a progenitor of the Venetian style, he published almost none of his own music. His works were sent to Gardano, the great Venetian printing house, by Giovanni after his death. Join with us in the great processions and ceremonies of the Serene Republic and feel the reverberations within the architecture of the magnificent church of the Doges.
