Detroit has been a part of every part of the saga of African American History - From the Underground Railroad to the Great Migration. From the Jazz Age to Motown. From Civil Rights to Black Power, Detroit has been at the center of the fight for Black progress and has been a primary source for the contributions of African Americans to national and world history.
Please join Historian & Tour Leader Jamon Jordan on these 10 virtual tours exploring topics and places in Detroit's history from the 1700s to the present. You can register for one or more of these virtual tours here.
They are all held on the 4th Monday of every month from 6-8pm.

Tour #1 - February 22nd - The Fight For Freedom: Friends & Enemies - Learn the history of slavery in the city of Detroit and the Fight Against It.
Tour #2 - March 22nd - Black Paradise: The Historic Neighborhoods of Black Bottom & Paradise Valley. Learn the origin, the rise, and fall of the two oldest Black communities in Detroit.
Tour #3 - April 26th - Detroit Divided: Jim Crow in Detroit and Detroit's Civil Rights Movement. Learn about Northern segregation and the history of Black resistance to inequality.
Tour #4 - May 24th - Black History in Midtown :From Brush Park to Sugar Hill. Learn the history of this early upper class Black community and the growth of the legacy of Paradise Valley.
Tour #5 - June 21st - Faith & Freedom: Important Black Churches and Their Role in the Abolitionist Movement and the Fight for Civil Rights. Learn about 5 early Black churches as well as European churches and 2 early Jewish synagogues and their involvement in the abolitionist and Civil Rights Movement.

Tour #8 - September 27th - Beyond Black Bottom: The Old Westside. Learn the history of one of the earliest Black neighborhoods after Black Bottom, and the oldest Black community on the westside of Detroit.
Tour #9 - October 25th - Beyond Black Bottom: The North End. Learn the history of this historic Black residential and business district that was a foundation in civil rights, faith, education and entertainment.
Tour #10 - November 22nd- Beyond Black Bottom: Conant Gardens. Learn the history of this important Black community that has had a thriving middle class for nearly a century.
