Event description

Description

Learn about the devastating consequences of fake medicines and the work of Notre Dame researchers to uncover substandard drugs in the developing world.

In the early 2000's, researchers discovered that nearly half of the antimalarial medications in some developing countries were fake. These products caused over 120,000 deaths per year. University of Notre Dame Professor Dr. Marya Lieberman will share her story about using new innovative methods to develop an inexpensive paper card system to detect counterfeit and substandard prescription medications. This research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Indiana University Center for Global Health.
