Description

This course will introduce the fundamental philosophy and elements of traditional architecture and their interiors. Participants will learn the design principles that are common to the great buildings and interiors of the past. Handouts will include measured drawings of traditional interiors and carpenter’s guidebooks that were used for centuries as a design tool. Topics discussed will include discovering the proportions common to traditional interiors and mastering simple yet time tested methods of designing and configuring char rails, baseboards, cornices, columns, mantle pieces, and door & window casings.

SESSION CONTENT


Friday Afternoon Session: 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

The introduction of the fundamental philosophy and elements of traditional architecture and their interiors. Review of handouts and class syllabus.

Saturday Session: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Participants will design their own traditional interior with a partial scaled floor plan and interior elevation using proportions and methods of designing and configuring char rails, baseboards, cornices, columns, mantle pieces, and door and window casings discussed in Friday Session. Lunch to be provided.

Credits: 9 AIA HSW/ LUs

Participants must attend both sessions to receive AIA LUs.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES


  • Learn simple yet proper methods of creating wainscoting, chair rails, cornices, and door & window casings.
  • Learn elements, proportional systems, and composition of interior spaces and their component parts and details.
  • Review the literature that craftsman have used for centuries that clarify and simply the “rules of thumb” that create timeless interior design.
  • Create classically inspired rooms that use sustainable building components and materials.
  • Create classically inspired rooms that meet modern code requirements and promote the health and welfare of the room’s occupants.


INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY


James S. Collins is an architect, educator and historic preservationist. He has taught accredited classes for the Charleston, Chicago, New York, North Carolina, Philadelphia and Southeastern Chapters of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. He is President of the North Carolina Chapter of Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. His firm’s projects have been featured in New Old House, Period Homes, and Washington Life Magazines as well as A Decade of Art and Architecture and the Classicist No. 13. He practices in New York City and North Carolina.
