Event description

Description

'Designing Southampton for Future Generations' is a special event for International Women’s Day Week, and taking place on Mothering Sunday as part of the Southampton Science and Engineering Festival - everyone is welcome.

Background information: ‘Sustainability’ is a word associated with the endurance and continuity of ecosystems necessary for ongoing survival. In the City context, it requires us to design our cities for the next generations, by taking into account the needs of children, i.e. creating an environment that benefits the community long term. However, practices over the past half century have concentrated largely on a ‘modernist’ top-down approach to town planning and the design of buildings. This deprioritises the needs of communities, and encourages a car-orientated approach in order to connect different buildings with their various uses. This approach is particularly harmful for children, due to a lack of community, poor air quality from exhaust emissions, as well as encouraging sedentary and car-orientated lifestyles that discourage walking and cycling, and independent mobility.

Workshop summary: As part of the emerging Future Cities Southampton Community Hub, this workshop provides a forum for discussing some of the more innovative ideas for city design and sustainable transport thinking. It will look at some of the required behavioural changes that we, as a City, need to adopt. These changes are focused around the needs of our children, i.e. the mobilisation and socialisation of people, and not around buildings and cars, in order to make the City more 'liveable' and vibrant. These changes cannot occur in isolation - parents, children, and other members of the community need to be engaged authentically in this debate, as well as the City Council and the Universities, who can act as catalysts for change.

** Free ** - but please register only if you have every intention of coming along to join in this community-based workshop. Further questions can be directed to our Twitter page: @SotonNow. Thank you.
