Design Your Talk Topic (San Francisco)

Tuesday, April 9th, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Women Talk Design is on a mission to see diverse speakers on stage, and we want to help you design your talk topic.

Do you want to start public speaking, or up-level your current UX speaking presence? In this workshop, you’ll learn and practice these essential three steps in designing a killer UX talk.

1. Define - What's the value of the talk you plan to give, and why would your audience be excited?

2. Differentiate - What is your unique value proposition?

3. Distribute - What happens to your talk once you leave the stage?

6:00 - 6:30 - Networking

6:30 - 8:20 - Workshop

8:20 - 8:30 - Closing Time

Instructor:

Sara Ortloff Khoury

Sara is a pioneer in design for software products and services distributed on the internet. Given the constant uncertainty brought by emerging technologies and economies throughout her career, she recently gave a TEDx talk on the topic of successfully navigating the fear of failure. She spent the first half of her career in 1990s bay area tech and creative services start-ups, building some of the first successful strategic design practices for companies such as Ikonic and Organic where businesses were first built on the web - rising to VP of Design, then shifting down to Creative Director, and finally leaping to Managing Director of the San Francisco office where she lead a 200 person engineering, design and project management team.

In 2002, when Sara’s twins were born, she left the workforce for 3 years. She returned in 2005 and pivoted to work client-side to build global, cross-functional product design teams for some of the largest traditional retail and financial businesses in the world - first as SVP, User Centered Design and Research at Bank of America, where she developed early strategies to deliver standard-setting multichannel retail banking experiences, and then at Walmart eCommerce where she was the company’s first VP of User Experience Research and Design - instrumental to building a cross-functional practice to deliver groundbreaking global multichannel retail experiences at scale.

In 2015, Sara pivoted from a 20 year career in design for consumers, to shift her career trajectory radically when she joined Bebop, a 30 person enterprise start-up founded by Diane Greene, as head of product management and design. Bebop was acquired by Google in 2016, where Sara is now a Director of User Experience Design in Cloud, one of Google’s fastest growing businesses.

Women Talk Design workshops are intended to give women and non-binary people in design and tech the framework and space to become a more confident public speaker. Please take a moment to read through Women Talk Design's Code of Conduct before registering.
