Architecture for Humanity Chicago

Architecture for Humanity is a nonprofit design service firm founded in 1999. By tapping a network of more than 40,000 professionals who lend time and expertise, we help those who could not otherwise be able to afford design, construction and development services, in the communities where they are most critically needed.

Who We Are

Architecture for Humanity Chicago is a regional chapter of Architecture for Humanity, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that seeks architectural solutions to humanitarian issues and brings design services to communities in need. We are a collaborative group of volunteer design professionals and students dedicated to the pursuit of advocacy and social change through the built environment.

Mission Statement

We believe in socially responsible design for our communities, nonprofit organizations, families, and individuals in Chicago. We believe in activism in our neighborhoods working collaboratively with community partners developing relationships with those that we serve by fostering a shared passion for clean, healthy, and sustainable spaces. We believe that design matters, people matter, and we should "Design like we give a Damn".

Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr founded Architecture for Humanity in 1999 in New York City. Architecture for Humanity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides design services for those in need. With a body of work including mobile health clinics in Africa, community centers, disaster relief to the south pacific tsunami, and hurricane Katrina, Architecture for Humanity believes that design matters and you should, “Design like you give a Damn. ”

In 2007 Architecture for Humanity launched the Open Architecture Network believing that providing a means of connecting like-minded architects designers and students the world over would produce volumes of easily accessible design solutions for those in need.

The Chicago chapter of Architecture for Humanity was founded in December of 2007 by four Chicago architects: John Joyce, Jaclyn Whitaker, Philip Schmidt, and Brian Landwehr. Since its inception AFH-Chicago has grown substantially making every effort, in the spirit of its namesake, to reach out and provide design services, volunteer work, and expertise to local nonprofits, people in need, and the Chicago community at large.
