About this Event

Where: SOUTH OXFORD SPACE, 138 SOUTH OXFORD STREET, BROOKLYN NY 11217

When: Friday November 1st 2pm to 6pm. (All lectures approx. 1hr)

• 2:00pm High Performance Gets Real, Presented by Nick Shaw of 475 Building Supply – 1 HSW CEU

In this one-hour course, the instructor will describe attributes of high-performance building, outline known challenges of material use in high performance buildings and describe what is meant by a systems approach and how it differs from conventional approaches. They will also outline the role of data collection in the evolution of high performance building best practices.

• 3:00pm The Blueprint for Fossil Fuel Free Buildings, Presented by Jeff Schwane PE, Senior Engineer at Carbon Lighthouse and Pallavi Mantha, Senior Consultant Energy and Sustainability at Arup – 1 HSW CEU

Reducing GHG emissions 80% by 2050 is generally recognized as the target to avoiding the worst effects of climate change. As architects and engineers, our building design choices play a large role in whether or not this goal is attainable. Carbon reductions at such a scale are only possible through drastic decreases or elimination of fossil fuel use in most sectors of the economy. As the electricity sector becomes cleaner through increased use of renewables and smart grid technologies, it provides a pathway to transition from fossil fuel use to electricity in new buildings. This presentation will provide an overview of the state of 80×50 today, the transformation to a clean grid, and advice for building designers on how to decarbonize designs through electrification.

• 4:00pm Living Building Challenge as a Response to Climate Change, Presented by Molly Freed, Senior Policy Specialist of the International Living Future Institute. – 1 HSW CEU

The Living Building Challenge is the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard for buildings. People from around the world use this regenerative design framework to create spaces that, like a flower, give more than they take.

*Happy hour - AIA Brooklyn networking event to follow at Der Schwareze Koelner
