How can student interest and real world problem solving be the instigators of a project experience? What are the ways to organize this type of learning experience so that there is both structure and flexibility? How can this type of project experience incorporate both rigorous assessment and target grade-level Common Core standards? These questions are at the heart of the Design Thinking Methods & Practices workshop.

So often, teachers are encouraged to integrate project-based learning and real world problem solving into their classrooms without the practical tools to support this process. The D3 process ("Dream it, Design it, Do it") is a simple toolset rooted in design thinking that offers a way to foster learning that is sparked by student interest and driven by civic action. Through a series of interactive and participatory challenges and activities, the Design Thinking Methods & Practices workshop will offer educators a chance to better understand what the design process is and how it can be incorporated into the classroom in relevant and engaging ways.

In doing so, Project MASH aims to bring all kinds of learning experiences from outside of school into your classroom with the social richness that young people expect, and then to send everyone out into the world at large to learn.

The New Learning Institute is a grassroots professional development initiative that gives classroom teachers the chance to learn together in dynamic, hands-on trainings; and to explore proven, engaging resources and approaches developed by exemplary out-of-school institutions.
