Design Sprint Your Ideas: A Beginner's Workshop

This is not design thinking.
This is a design sprint.

Featuring Wong Hock Sum (left), Head of Value Chain Management of Enterprise at Maxis, facilitated by design sprint advocate Marcus Koh (right) of Positive X.

Who is this workshop for?
  • CEOs of startups.
  • Product guys of any company size.
  • Or anyone whose legs go wobbly at the word "brainstorm" (not in a good way).

What is this workshop about?
This is a taster session for those interested in learning how to use the design sprint method or anyone with a critical business question seeking to quickly solve problems or validate solutions while cutting through long-drawn-out debates and discussions.

Hands-on and activity-driven, we will bring you through a real-world problem presented by Hock Sum and work on real-world solutions facilitated by Marcus and you! This is a collaborative process that involves individual deliberation and collectively voting using the humble but handy Post-its - we call it "working alone, together".

At the end of this workshop, there will be no right or wrong answer. Design sprinting is best approached with an experimental mindset.

What is Design Sprint?
Originally developed by Google Venture, the venture capital investment arm of Google, design sprint has been widely used for:
  • Launching a new product or service, or
  • adding new features and functionality to existing offerings
  • Digitising or improving an existing customer experience
  • Revising, updating, and/or improving UI/UX design

Design sprints are a way to quickly test your ideas and solutions in a safe, low-cost environment - think of a baby in a swaddle in a crib. In design sprinting, you're that cosy baby!

How do I know if I need design sprint?
  • You have a problem, but no idea how to solve it
  • The impact to your organisation is high if your idea fails
  • Your confidence in your idea is low
  • You suffer from 'paralysis by analysis' and you are generally risk-averse

That said, innovation is necessary in your organisation to stay ahead of the curve.

If you said yes to some or all of the above, all you need to do is visit www.getrichquick.com and purchase this workshop.

Just kidding, design sprint toolkits are open source and this workshop is free of charge! We will review your registration to ensure that you and your organisation are the right fit to, well, benefit from our session. This is especially important as seats are limited! We will be in touch once your seat has been confirmed.

About the featured product guy:
Wong Hock Sum has over 18 years' experience, primarily within the telecommunication industry working for the likes of Digi, Maxis and TIME dotcom. Throughout his career, he has accumulated in-depth experience in product development and management particularly in the areas of mobile, broadband, enterprise products and value-added services. As an industry veteran, he has witness firsthand the opportunities and threat of rapid digitisation from within and without and how these telco giants respond and pivot.

Currently, as the Head of Value Chain Management of Enterprise in Maxis, he oversees the product development work for Maxis' enterprise business, a RM800mil revenue business, across the value chain of the product from conceptualisation to Go-to-Market.
About the facilitator:
Marcus doesn't look it, but he has over 20 years' experience in both the corporate world and as an entrepreneur. In his past life, he was with Accenture and TIME dotCom covering areas within the financial project management, new business development, and product development & management.

Later on, his attention shifted to founding start-ups. He believes Design Sprints is a suitable tool to unlock innovation for time-pressed and resource tight businesses. Clients he has worked with include Happy Bunch, pioneers in the online flower delivery; Supplycart, who recently closed USD2.5mil Series A funding; and Women of Will, an NGO that focuses on helping the B40 women and community in Malaysia. Marcus is currently facilitating Malaysia's inaugural YSEALI (Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative) nationwide boot camp with Me.reka Makerspace.
