Event description

Description

Design is the new Management Consulting

Two truths:

  1. People are talking more than ever about the role design and UX play in organizational transformation. While the language may vary, (design thinking, HCD, co-creation, UX, CX, design ops, digital transformation), the mental model remains the same.
  2. Designers and UXers are still asking how to get management buy-in, how to prove ROI, and how to help people understand the value of what they do.

This points to a fundamental disconnect between businesses who have made the leap to customer-driven business models and those who haven’t—as well as to a growing divide between UX professionals who feel equipped to lead their industry into new territory of organizational change…and those who don’t.

As UX professionals, our experience and education give us a natural advantage in systems thinking. It’s how we are trained to think. As businesses begin to evolve and look for better ways to serve their customers, we have a clear opportunity to help lead the charge into the next era of organizational design. Gone are the business books of the 80s and 90s with their embossed cover charts and gold letters; today’s business thinking is grounded in theories from IDEO, podcasts about user research, human-centered design, and customer centricity. Reframing the conversation away from ROI and the bottom line and towards what an organization needs to be able to compete in 2018 gives us a means to effect real change.

This talk will offer a framework for understanding and communicating about the role of design and UX in organizational transformation. It will offer practical tips for changing the conversation; steering away from the traps of short-term thinking and giving you tools to promote change from within.

Speaker Bio

Katie Lukas has been in digital media for over 20 years, along a career trajectory that began in design, developed in business management, sprouted UX and CX tentacles, and has grown into a chimera encompassing all of the above. She’s worked with tiny startups and blue chip organizations, both as team member and team leader, across a vast array of projects from working on the very first Weather.com in 1996 on up to broad omnichannel initiatives for retail brands.
