Industry Leaders and Entrepreneurs Explore How to Launch and Lead a Successful Creative Company for San Francisco DesignWeek
Zinc Details and design showcase FormFactorsSF are pleased to present “Design Inc.: How to Design a Brand.” This inspirational discussion will explore what it takes to build a design brand,
form a strong identity, sell good design and maintain momentum. The panel will feature
four of the Bay Area’s leading product designers and creative companies including Beau
Oyler of Urbio, Max Gunawa of Lumio, Michael Good of Opus Garten and Markus
Diebel and Joe Tan of Moreless.
The panel will be moderated by Marieke van der Poel chair of FormFactorsSF and founder of the San Francisco-based trend consultancy Proef. Topics to be discussed include product development and funding sources, how to deal with company growing pains and how to build a solid brand identity that lasts.
About the Panelists
Michael Good founded good3studio in 2012 to develop social and green products. In spring 2014, he founded OPUS GARTEN, which features novel, durable and aesthetic tools for indoor gardeners. His products include rootcup, which is available in 120+ retail locations world-wide, including over a dozen museum shops and botanical gardens such as MoMA in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, and the Botanic Gardens in Brooklyn, Chicago and Sydney. He is also the designer of the Hängen Wall Planter, and AirplantNest.
Max Gunawan spent 10 years as an architect before launching Lumio, named one of the “Top 10 Most Innovative Crowdfunded Companies” by Entrepreneur magazine in 2013. His work employs minimal and clean-line design, and centers around optimizing the use of small spaces. Max has been covered by numerous publications from the Wall Street Journal to the SF Chronicle, and recently spoke at TEDx conference. Born in Jakarta, Max is currently based in San Francisco.
Beau Oyler is the designer of Urbio, an innovative wall organizational system he created with Jared Aller and the Enlisted Design team. As designers, Beau and Jared have created
lifestyle products for companies such as Williams-Sonoma, Nestlé, Netgear and Clorox. They've won numerous design awards and are constantly striving to create products that will benefit mankind, Urbio is one such product.
Joe Tan and Markus Diebel
Alumni of IDEO and Incase, Joe Tan and Markus Diebel are the founders of Moreless. They have extensive experience in strategic consulting and deep understanding of how to successfully create manufacture and brand and sell products. Together they hold over 80 patents and have brought 600 products to markets. Their multidisciplinary practice includes brand strategy, graphic design, packaging design, product design, interior design as well as manufacturing liaison. Their clients range from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.

Marieke van der Poel is the creative mastermind of the trend agency Proef. Her experience ranges from macro-trend translations for international marketing teams to specific, ready-to-use color, material and style direction for all types of consumer products. Marieke is highly regarded in the industry for her ability to connect high level long-term trending to time-targeted brand specific trend stories, translating these into tangible product and design direction.
