Design Foresight Symposium: Exploring the multifaceted design foresight landscape

About this event

The Design Foresight Network – initiated by an international group of researchers affiliated with Aalborg University and Design School Kolding – hereby invites all design and foresight enthusiasts in and around Copenhagen to a symposium at Aalborg University in Copenhagen. The theme will be the intersection of design and foresight.

Over the last years, the mutual interest between design and foresight grew significantly, leading to various intertwined design-driven futures or futures-driven design approaches, and associated sub-disciplines, such as speculative design, design fiction, or critical design. The contribution that the integration of design and foresight/futuring can make is manifold but emerges around the potential of anticipation, speculation, and imagination to inform and incite sustainable change in the present.

Of course, Denmark was not left out of this development but the growing interest led to a multitude of novel projects, initiatives, frameworks, task forces, and the like. The purpose of the symposium is to bring together practitioners and researchers working at the intersection of design and foresight. Through listening to short presentations from various Danish companies and organizations, we will together explore, discuss, and shed light on the various, potentially diverse, approaches, intentions, and ideas that combine design and foresight and that aim at driving sustainability in diverse areas of work.

In addition, we will also discuss the possibility to get involved in the Design Foresight Network and participating in future joint initiatives.

About the Design Foresight Network

The Design Foresight Network is an informal network of researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of design and futures. On the hand, we are interested in how design disciplines (e.g. urban design, service design, interaction design, product design, experience design, social design, etc.) can be integrated with theoretical perspectives and methods from futures thinking, i.e. those approaches to envision, describe and explain future developments and to assess how our decisions and actions in the present can impact them. On the other, we seek to explore how futures thinking can benefit from design approaches and methods, i.e. those practices undertaken to identify, frame, and address problems by significantly relying on modeling and other visual and physical representations, iterative and participatory processes, and on user-, human- and life-centered perspectives.

The network was kickstarted and is coordinated by a group of researchers from Aalborg University and Design School Kolding and welcomes the participation of like-minded individuals and organizations. Regular activities of the network include monthly coordination and networking meetings, in which the members explore the possibility of collaborating on grant proposals, pitches, projects and research projects, dissemination events, and publications. The network also organizes educational sessions and other events to publicly present our work.
