The Design for America Leadership Studio (DFA LS ’15) is a chance to gain immersive experiences in human-centered design with a hands-on project, develop your creative leadership skills, and prepare for an awesome year as a Design of America leader. 

This year's $50 registration fee is to contribute to the food for the weekend so that we can bring as many students as possible!!

  • TRAVEL: 
    • This year's Leadership Studio will take place in Evanston, IL, just outside of Chicago on August 6th-10th. Activities will kick-off at 7:00pm Thursday August 6th and wrap up by Monday August 10th at 3:00pm.
    • Both O'hare and Midway are good airport options to fly in and out of, although public transit is slightly easier from O'hare.
    • Indicate on your registration if you would like a roommate and we will put you in touch within two weeks of the May registration deadline. (Roommates should then coordinate amongst each other who will pay for the room and how the other person will be reimbursed. Paypal is an easy way to go and many banks offer mobile payment options.)
    • We have reserved a conference rate at the nearby Best Western for $99/night or ~$45/night with a roommate. After you have been assigned a roommate, book your room before July 6th. Just mention Design for America to get the discounted rate!
    • Some Evanston host are available for those who need it. On a first come first served basis. If you know someone locally, you can stay with them, we just asked you stay within a 20 minute walk to campus. 
    • Any cancellations made after July 15th will incur a $50 late cancellation fee. 


Need funding to help cover your flight and housing costs.? Check out the tips below!

    • Many universities offer support for students to go to conferences. But watch out, universities can be full of bureaucracy. Go right to the department head and make your case for why they should support you going! Have your DFA pitch ready to go, describe who you are and why coming to this event is important for your education.
    • Help all your DFA studio leads make it this year by holding a fundraiser! You can host a potluck dinner, sell hand-made DFA t-shirts, do a bake-sale, you name it!
    • Ask people to donate their miles to cover your airfare!
    • Make the case to your parents or care-taker why you need to come to this workshop so that you can join the pre-eminent network for leaders of innovation.
    • For those demonstrating financial need and have actively searched for external funding, some may qualify for DFA scholarships to cover registration, housing, and/or travel. Scholarships applications are on a rolling basis, so APPLY FOR A DFA SCHOLARSHIP HERE by May 19th!
