Event Details

In talking about the release of the Giro Prolight, two time Hawaii Ironman Triathlon Champion Scott Tinley said Jim Gentes “just revolutionized the bicycle helmet industry” and that “he’s going to save lives and make millions”. Tinley was right on all three of his assertions.

Through initial scrappy bootstrapping and consistent innovation,  Jim Gentes took Giro from a small operation that ran out of his garage into the number one company in the bike and ski helmet industry. Jim will share the details of his entrepreneurial journey that began with his vision for a light, well ventilated, safe and cooling looking helmet and culminated with the sale of Giro to Easton-Bell Sports.

Jim is a lifelong competitive cyclist. He was the 1979 U.S. national cylcocross champion. After receiving his industrial design degree from SJSU, he founded Giro in 1986. His Aerohead and Air Attack helmets are in MOMA’s permanent collection. Ernst & Young selected Jim as its 1993 Entrepreneur of the Year.
