Event Details

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is proud to present it's first ever Summer Day Camp - inspired by art, imagination, & design for students in grade 4-7. Kamp Camp is a one week entry-level Design & Creativity camp taught by design professionals for students interested in pushing their creativity to the next level.

Classes will run from Monday June 24th, 2013 through Friday June 28th, 2013 daily from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm. Two LACCD art instructors will be present to teach at all times. The Camp will be located at LACCD's Van De Kamp Innovation Center, a state of the art facility featuring all the latest technology as part of the learning environment.

Through this program, students will utilize their designs through the same industry programs used by professionals from Adobe Ideas on the Apple Ipad, to Trimble's 3D modeling program Sketchup. Each student will be provided with a custom e-mail address to be used to create a free Dropbox account which parents will be able to access everyday to see the work of their students.

The cost to attend Kamp Camp is $175.00. This price will include all relevant art supplies as well as a daily juice & snack.

 This one week venture into design and imagination covers:

{ Character Design }

>>>>>>>>The key to a strong imagination is to be able to think outside of the box. Instead of looking at the world the way that it is, kamp camp looks at the world as an endless source of imagination. Through studies of facial expressions, and how objects function, students will be asked to create characters from everyday household objects.

{ Environment Design }

>>>>>>>>At Kamp Camp, students step into the shoes of young architects to create their own dream school. Students will learn the process of design beginning with a concept. Case studies of schools that emphasize design as a tool to inspire will be used as case studies to show the importance of design in a social context. Students will be engaged in an open discussion about what they would want to see in the perfect school.

A site will be provided to each student which he/ she will analyze in order to space plan a new school building with a design of their choice. Students will be guided and taught to think critically about how the design of an environment comes from research and function. The goal of this exercise is to teach students the process of design and how critical thinking plays a major part in its execution. This will be taught at an entry level standard which Kamp Camp students will feel engaged and excited about.

{ 3D Modeling }

>>>>>>>>Students at Kamp Camp will have the exciting opportunity to see their paper concepts and ideas developed into a 3d environment. Using design industry programs such as Sketchup and Artlantis, students will learn to create colorful renderings of their school to present at a final show and tell on the last day of class. Students will learn at their own pace and are not expected to learn or create professional standard renderings within a day. Instead, they are introduced to powerful tools that may engage their future interest in the field of design. The class is intended to be fun and enriching, and the ultimate goal of Kamp Camp is to ignite the artistic passion within these young minds. All parents are welcome and are encouraged to attend the final show and tell.
